KINDNESS CHAIN: Between Thanksgiving and Christmas the second graders at Northeast Elementary read “Random Acts of Kindness” with Patti Phelps reading aloud. These books were provided for each student by St. Thomas. Because the plot is about a school who has a “kindness week” we decided to copy that for the month. Each week students would bring in slips of paper with their random acts of kindness. These included: ” helping my mom do the dishes,” “folding laundry,” “sharing my crayons,” “separating the mamas from the babies (for clarification I found out it was the cows) and “picking up trash on the school bus.” The last week of school we finished reading the book and gave each student his or her own copy of a Magic Tree House book from St Thomas for Christmas. The highlight of the day was when we all went in the hallway to hang up their kindness chain. This was an example of giving during a time when a lot of kids think of getting and they were pleased with their chain of kindness.
