The Major Reading Blount Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Feb. 20, at the Brown Library in Washington. Regent Reid Solomon called the meeting to order and led the DAR Ritual, the Pledge of Allegiance, Preamble to the Constitution, My DAR Pledge and the North Carolina salute to the Flag. Ten members were present. Chapter officers and committee chairmen presented reports.
A devotion, with the theme of trust in God, was read by Chaplin JoAnn Walker.
Vice Regent Connye Dillon presented information about internet hackers for the National Defense Report. Hacking is one way for foreign countries to engage the United States without firing a shot. The government is reviewing its cyber security.
Anita Fletcher presented the flag moment. She read a short story by an unknown author, entitled “The Flag.” In the story, the flag is personified, and it questions the bygone respect people once had for the flag. It asks why there is less respect for the flag now. Is there less patriotism? He encourages us to stand straight and salute and “I will wave back.”
It was announced that two new members have been approved by transfer. We welcome Kathy Hunter and Judy Fuller.
Registrar Betsy Lee Hodges reported that there are 21 Units Overseas Chapters in 12 countries, with the first being established in 1897. The chapters remain true to DAR goals adding the flavor of the culture of that country. Local members are encouraged to become associate members of at least one of the Units Overseas Chapters.
Members were informed that the DAR state conference will be held in Raleigh at the Crabtree Valley, April 25-29. Delegates were chosen. Also the 243rd anniversary celebration of the adoption of the Halifax Resolves is on April 12, in Halifax.
For the program, Vice Regent Dillon provided materials and instruction for the members to write cards of appreciation and thanksgiving to the veterans who are residing in the area nursing homes.
The next DAR meeting will be on March 20 at Brown Library. A Tea Cup Auction will be held.
