Annual 4-H livestock show, fundraiser coming up

4-H is gearing up for spring with its annual livestock show and sale, and a longstanding Tractor Supply-partnered fundraiser.

The Paper Clover Campaign, held each year by Tractor Supply, raises money for 4-H clubs across the country. Starting today, Tractor Supply shoppers can buy a paper clover for $1; the funds raised through paper clover sales will be used to send Beaufort County 4-H members to 4-H camps and leadership conferences. Since the first fundraiser was held in 2010, the Tractor Supply company has raised more than $14 million for the nationwide organization.

Four 4-H clubs operate in Beaufort County, with more than 100 members combined, according to Beaufort County 4-H agent Chasady Quinn. 4-H’s mission for Beaufort County youth, and youth everywhere, is to improve knowledge and leadership skills through hands-on programming.

I think that it encourages (members) to be independent, and they do a lot of presentations in front of people, so it teaches them confidence in public speaking, and it shows them how important it is to give back to their community,” Quinn said, adding that each club is required to do a service project each year.

Those presentations often have to do with their projects, which can range in topic from science and health to civic engagement and agriculture. For the local clubs, agriculture is the force behind their annual livestock show and sale.

“Most of (their projects) are livestock-based — deer, goats, lambs, hogs,” Quinn said. “I’m hoping there’s more diversity this year, but since they do the livestock show, they usually turn that into what their project is on.”

The livestock show will take place at the Coastal Carolina Gin in Pantego from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

Coastal Carolina Gin is located at 4851 Terra Ceia Road. Tractor Supply is located in Washington, at 608 W. 15th St. The Paper Clover Campaign runs until April 7.
