John Stephenson Phelps, Sr.

John Stephenson Phelps, Sr., 70, of Plymouth, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 21, 2019, at his residence.

Born in Beaufort County on June 19, 1948, he was the son of the late  John W. and Mabel White Phelps. He was married to the former Annie Calloway, who survives.

He was a member of the Plymouth Church of God; he loved fishing, hunting and was a member of the Tri County Hunting Club. He enjoyed cooking and coaching his little league baseball team “Organized Labor.”

Mr. Phelps worked for the Weyerhaeuser Corporation until his retirement.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, April 25, 2019, at the Plymouth Church of God. Burial will follow in the family plot in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Jeff Person and William Braswell will officiate.

In addition to his wife, surviving is a son, Johnny S. Phelps, Jr. and wife Jakki, of Plymouth; a daughter, Debbie P. James and husband Scott, of Creswell; and four grandchildren, Ashley James, Parker Phelps, Carly James and Harley James.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy Phelps and Robert “Bob” Phelps.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Plymouth Church of God.

Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
