Seven ECU baseball players taken in MLB Draft

While East Carolina University’s baseball season continues this week with a trip to Louisville for super regionals, seven Pirates were drafted Monday through Wednesday afternoons, with a few players going in the top 10 rounds.

In the fourth round with the 135th overall pick, the New York Yankees selected starting pitcher and American Athletic Conference pitcher of the year, Jake Agnos. In the 2019 season, he boasted an 11-2 pitching record with a 2.02 ERA. He struck out 140 batters (An ECU and AAC single-season record) in 98 complete innings of work.

The MLB draft allots a certain amount of money each team can use for the draft. The number differentiates for each team depending on the moves they make within the their roster.

For example, the Arizona Diamondbacks will have $16,093,700 to spend in this year’s draft. Their first round pick, will receive a contract value of $3,745,500.

In Agnos’ case, he will receive $414,000. This is divvied up through time, so eventually Agnos will be paid his contract value.

Bryant Packard was selected in the fifth round with the 142nd pick to the Detroit Tigers. Packard, a product of D.H. Conley High School, finished with a .363 batting average on the season with seven home runs and 40 RBIs.

Spencer Brickhouse rounded out the first day of the MLB draft for the Pirates, going in the seventh round with pick number 212 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Brickhouse had a .335 batting average with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs on the season.

Packard’s contract is worth $386,600, while Brickhouse’s signing slot number hovers around $210,000.

Four Pirates were selected on day three of the draft, as various teams took Trey Benton, Turner Brown, Evan Voliva and Jake Washer.

Benton was the first to be selected in the 15th round by the Cleveland Indians. He appeared in 13 games. He collected a 4-0 record from the bump with 29 strikeouts in 24.2 innings pitched.

Voliva was the second pitcher and player from ECU to be picked up by the Yankees in the 18th round. He appeared in 31 games this season out of the bullpen, holding a 5-4 record with four saves and a 3.44 ERA. He struck out 47 batters in 34 innings of work, only surrendering 13 runs on 24 hits in that span.

The Colorado Rockies picked up Brown in the 19th round of the draft. The senior received second-team All-AAC honors in his senior campaign, as he compiled a .300 batting average with 33 RBIs and 39 runs scored.

In the 29th round of the draft, the Chicago Cubs selected ECU starting catcher Jake Washer. He has been on a tear in the post-season, hitting seven homeruns in eight post-season games this year. He batted .310 with 17 home runs on the season with 55 RBIs.

With the seven selections in the MLB draft, it marks the first time in program history the team has produced seven draftees in one draft, and the most in one draft class since 2004. Players have until July to decide whether they’ll sign to the team that drafted them or return to school.
