Dr. William Ernest Chauncey, age 79, a resident of Washington, died Monday, June 24, 2019, at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2019, in the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington. Pallbearers at the funeral home will be Chris Furlough, Pat Dintino, Ray Jazayeri, Scott Chauncey, Ike Baldree and Tom Dintino. Burial will follow immediately in Oakdale Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 26, 2019, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.
Dr. Chauncey was born in Grifton on May 8, 1940, son of the late Julius Gibbons Chauncey and the late Mary Frances McDaniel Chauncey. He was a 1958 graduate of Grifton High School. Following high school, he served his country in the U.S. Marines, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army. While serving with the Air Force, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. During Desert Storm, he was called back to duty. During his military career he taught chemical, biological and nuclear warfare.
He received his undergraduate degree at Barton College, his master’s degree from Walden University, and his doctorate degree from Kensington University.
Following his military service, he worked with Glaxo Wellcome, of Greenville. After retirement, he was a mathematics professor at Pitt Community College.
He was very active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and held the position of Quarter Master. He was a former member of First Christian Church of Grifton and a current member of First United Methodist Church of Washington.
Dr. Chauncey was predeceased by his wife, Nan S. Schoonover.
Surviving family are his wife, Dr. Alline B. Chauncey, and two daughters, Maureen Dintino (Tom), of Lansing, and Anna Margaret Jazayeri (Ray), of Wilmington; two stepchildren, Kelly Michelle Aaron (Josh), of Oradell, New Jersey, and Geoffrey Todd Riddick (Mary Beth), of Clayton; a brother, Gibb Chauncey (Becky), of Winterville; a sister, Linda Chauncey Baldree (Ike), of Bath; and eight grandchildren, Andy Carazo (Viri), Patrick Dintino, Kamran Jazayeri, Zoe Gold-Aaron, Sophia Aaron, Max Aaron, Sawyer Riddick and Kesler Riddick.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979 or to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), 102 Enterprise Dr., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
