Miriam Suzanne “Sue” Brookshire, age 73, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, at her home in Washington. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church of Washington, where Sue was a longtime member. The family will receive visitors at the church following the service.

Sue and her twin sister Diane were born on June 30, 1946, in Greenville, South Carolina, to Toy and Sybil Calvert. She grew up in the mill village in Worthville, North Carolina, and attended school in nearby Randleman — where she met Curtis “Buddy” Brookshire, who would later become her husband of 52 years.

Sue graduated from Taylorsville High School and received an undergraduate degree from Miami University in Ohio. She would go on to earn three master’s degrees from East Carolina University.

For 25 years, Sue was a counselor at Beaufort County Community College, where she helped students pursue their educational goals, while supporting their social and emotional well-being. She is also remembered for her time as a preschool teacher at FUMC.

Sue is survived by her husband, Curtis; her sons, Marc and Matthew, and their spouses, Sarah Moore and Luis Jaramillo; her grandchildren, Lilley, Rose and Henry; and her sister, Diane Cox, sister-in-law Martha Brown, and their families.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care that Sue received from the staff at Physicians East Cancer Center and Community Home Care & Hospice, and for the kind support of their Camp Leach neighbors and church family.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the Sue Brookshire Scholarship Fund at Beaufort County Community College by calling 252-940-6270.
