Conley 46, Washington 39

Pam Pack comeback bid falls short at D.H. Conley

An absolute slug fest took place in Greenville on Friday night, as the Conley Vikings prevailed over the Pam Pack in a 46-39 thriller.

Washington opened up the game in a deep 14-0 hole, but Antwone Godley’s first of three touchdowns on the night put the Pam Pack on the scoreboard. Conley responded with a score on a short field after a long kickoff return, but Terry Moore answered the call with a touchdown of his own.

The Vikings (5-3) waltzed down the field again late in the first half, and on a fourth and goal from the 9-yard line, Vikings quarterback Nick Hamilton tossed a touchdown pass to the back of the end zone for the 27-14 lead.

In three plays, Washington scored on the ensuing drive. A first down run from Godley paired with a long pass down field to Hayden Anderson put the Pack inside the 5-yard line. Moore scored his second touchdown on the next play. The 2-point conversion cut the deficit to 27-22 at the break.

A field goal capped the first drive of the second half, but the Vikings responded with a touchdown and a fumble recovery on the following kickoff.

Hamilton dotted up another perfect pass to his receiver on a post pattern to increase the Viking lead to 39-25.

Godley wasn’t done, though. Around midfield, he shook off a couple of would-be tacklers in the backfield, found a seam and darted 40-yards for the score.

Washington’s defense forced the Vikings to punt. The Pam Pack blocked it and recovered inside Viking territory. Godley then scored his third rushing touchdown on the evening to tie it at 39-apiece.

The two teams swapped possessions late, but the biggest play of the game came on a fourth and 15 from the Pam Pack 20-yard line. Hamilton dropped back and threw it to the his favorite target, Leshaun Atchinson for his fourth and final touchdown grab of the evening for the game-winner.

Washington had a chance at the end, but fumbled in Vikings territory.

“It hurts, man. It just hurts,” Moore said after the game. “It was a great game. We went toe-to-toe with them but this is gonna teach us a great lesson. We just have to pay more attention. We have to execute better.”

The loss doesn’t hurt the Pam Pack’s 3-0 conference record, but they drop to 6-2 on the season with a trip to South Lenoir (2-5, 0-3 Eastern Carolina 2A) looming.

“Tonight’s loss is going to teach us a lot of things about ourselves going forward. We fully expect to win our next three games and be one of the top seeds in the east region come bracket time,” head coach Jon Blank said. “I hope this one stings a little bit, because we don’t want to feel this again this season. We’ve got to learn from these experiences, and if we do we’ll be all the better from it.”

Pamlico County 53, Southside 36

Southside put together a valiant effort and held the Hurricanes to 15 first half points. The Seahawks maintained an early 18-13 lead in the second half, but the Hurricanes went on a scoring run and never looked back.

Southside drops to 2-6 with an 0-3 conference mark, but with the cancellation of Jones Senior’s football season, the Seahawks will earn the conference victory and improve to 3-6 with a 1-3 conference record.

The Seahawks’ next conference matchup will be at home against Riverside on Nov. 1.

Bethel Christian Academy 60, Pungo Christian Academy 8

The Pungo Christian Academy Raiders’ season comes to a close on Friday night with a loss to Bethel.

Ryan Bishop scored a touchdown in his final game of his career.

The Raiders wrap up their season with a 1-7 record.
