Mary Elizabeth “Dot” Smith Hollowell

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth “Dot” Smith Hollowell, age 93, a former resident of Bay City Road, Aurora, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2019, at Bayview Nursing Center, New Bern.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, conducted by Earl Sadler, Jr. and Raymond Lagcher. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.

The following will serve as pallbearers: Michael DeBerry, Scott Henley, Steven Maharrey, Ken Stilley, Pete Stilley and Al Stilley.

Mrs. Hollowell was born in Lenoir County on April 2, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Lloyd Leslie Smith and Tiffany Waller Smith. She graduated from Deep Run High School. Mrs. Hollowell earned her teaching degree from Atlantic Christian College. She taught school in Bath for one year and the rest of her teaching career in Aurora. Mrs. Hollowell was a member of the Dublin Grove Free Will Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years, sang in the church choir and was a member of the Ladies’ Aide. In her spare time, she loved to read, listen to music, shop and travel as long as her health permitted.

On May 29, 1948, she married William Augustus Hollowell, who preceded her in death, June 20, 1987.

Mrs. Hollowell is survived by a daughter, Patty H. DeBerry and husband Delbert, of Wake Forest; son, Lloyd Hollowell and wife Beverly, of Aurora; three grandchildren, Christy Henley, Michael DeBerry, Kelly Maharrey; and six great-grandchildren, Matthew Henley, Dylan Henley, Madison Henley, Lauren Henley Canaan DeBerry, and Summer Maharrey.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
