City to hold “Adopt-A-Wetland” cleanup Saturday

From the City of Washington
Saturday, the City of Washington will host its ninth-annual “Adopt-A-Wetland” cleanup. We encourage any and all interested people to come out at 8 a.m. Saturday for the annual cleanup. We will be cleaning only the area inside the wetlands and should only take approximately two hours. The City of Washington’s constructed wetlands are located beside the N.C. Estuarium on Water Street and collect storm water runoff from the downtown area of Washington. This water meanders through the wetlands over a period of several days, dropping particulates rich in nitrogen and phosphorous, which are harmful to the Tar/Pamlico River watershed. When the stormwater eventually is released through the outfall into the Pamlico River the water is significantly cleaner. Anyone interested can contact the City at 252-975-9310 or 252-927-9374. We look forward to seeing you there.
