The Pam Pack and Seahawk swim teams have had a successful season thus far, and they placed second on Wednesday evening in both boys and girls, while Southside finished fourth, at the Moore Aquatic Center in Washington.
D.H. Conley has a pretty stout team, according to the Washington and Southside coaching staff. They won the meet on Wednesday and finished first in the vast majority of events throughout the course of the evening.
Washington’s Tristan Pake won the 100-yard backstroke with a personal-best time of 57.90 seconds. This shattered his former best time of one minute and 3.54 seconds.
Patrick Lovenberg and Tripp Pippin finished first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Lovenberg also set a season-best time of 1:02.97, shaving off .08 seconds from his previous PR, finishing second in the boys’ 100-yard freestyle.
“It was good,” Lovenberg said about his day in the pool. “We just need more consistency of times from our swimmers. We have to keep swimming in practice to get better and keep shaving time off our finishes (to get back to a state championship level).”
The Pam Pack won consecutive State Championships in 2016 and 2017.
Southside’s freshman swimmer Delta Cole picked up a second-place finish in the Girls’ 100-yard freestyle, only 1.4 seconds off the leader from Conley. Delta Cole slashed 1.03 seconds off of her previous best time with a 59.98 second result.
Southside’s Ethan Sommers recorded a season-best finish of 2:17.44 in the 200-yard freestyle.
The platoon of Chandler Woolard, Aspen Sommers, Grayson Spruill and Anna Yoder earned Washington a second-place finish in the girls’ 200-yard Freestyle Relay with a 2:01.32 finish. Southside’s team also placed sixth and earned points for the Seahawks team with Elizabath Wood, Emiley Gurganus, Darah and Delta Cole and a time of 2:12.11, a season-best.
Combined between Washington and Southside swimmers, 31 personal-records were set in various events. That’s an encouraging step forward for Southside and Washington swim coach Kaitlyn Richards said.
“We’ve done really well, we’ve definitely had faster meets, but this is our third meet in a calendar week, so they’re exhausted,” Richards stated. “Honestly, they can’t do much more than they’re doing now to improve. Two weeks ago, we had 30 best times. Two days later, we had 21 more personal-bests. We’re dropping time right and left, they’re working hard, and I just hope the holiday season doesn’t throw us off.”
Southside and Washington will have another home meet on Saturday, Dec. 14 against Croatan and East Carteret. Warm-ups will commence at 9 a.m. and the meet will begin at 10 a.m.
