The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, at Union Grove Church of Christ and other times at the home of his son, Walter J. Harris Sr., at 5687 N.C. Highway 99 North, Pantego.

Mr. Harris was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 24, 1921, son of the late Walter Jarvis Harris, Sr. and the late Bertha Cooper Harris. He attended school in the Pungo Community of Pantego and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His last mission of the war was onboard the USS Atlanta, which patrolled the waters around the USS Missouri while the treaty ending the war was signed between the USA and Japan. He married the former Alfra Etta Rose, who preceded him in death on Nov. 30, 2002.

Mr. Harris was a self-employed farmer. He loved his family, working his collection of animals and was known by many by the “egg man.” He was a member of Union Grove Church of Christ. Instead of traveling overseas, Mr. Harris chose to apply his mission work for Christ to be held locally by giving a helping hand to others in need.

Survivors include a son, Walter J. Harris Sr. and his wife, Corry, of Pantego; a nephew, who he helped raise and considered as his son, Junnie Harris and his wife Jackie, of Winterville; four grandchildren, Walter J. Harris Jr., Carl Scott Harris, James Daryl Harris and Lauren Harris Toler; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased along with his parents and wife by two sons, Leonard Eric Harris and James Michael Harris; a daughter, Judy Lane Harris; a grandson, James Michael Harris II; five brothers, Ottis, Edmond, Hassel, Esau and Joseph Harris; and a sister, Louise Harris.

Flowers are welcome and appreciated and the family kindly asks for any memorial contributions be made to Union Grove Church of Christ, 6889 N.C. Highway 99 North, Pantego, NC 27860.
