Works of art by the smallest of hands, along with those who’ve grown into their talent, are on display at Arts of the Pamlico’s Turnage Theatre.

The Student Art Show opens Wednesday with a reception from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the theater. Featuring works from Beaufort County schools and students ranging in age from kindergarten to 12^th grade, the show is a joyfully colorful exhibit filling all the gallery space available in the downtown Washington theater.

According to Thad Aley, events and exhibits coordinator for Arts of the Pamlico, 11 schools delivered the best of their students’ artwork for the exhibit. Both public and private schools are invited to participate.

“We actually leave it to the schools to jury in up to 30 students’ work. We wish we could have more, but we could potentially have 14 schools (participating),” Aley said.

Washington Montessori Public Charter School and Beaufort County Early College High School’s art club are first time exhibitors in the annual show that’s been held for nearly a decade.

Aley said the students’ work is truly impressive and diverse, from its construction-paper animals to highly skilled pencil drawings.

“There is a great amount of creativity, from the standard classroom projects they work on, to the amount of creativity teachers are allowing their students to have,” Aley said. “If they were for sale, I know I’d buy a couple of pieces.”
