Tyrrell County was declared to be in a state of emergency from and after 12 noon on Mar. 20 to combat the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Chairman Tommy Everett signed the declaration following a brief meeting of the Tyrrell County Board of Commissioners at 10 a.m. Friday.

The declaration prohibits mass gatherings anywhere in the county, pursuant to state and federal laws.

It discourages residents from discretionary travel to and from the county.

It encourages citizens to follow the six-foot social distancing rule, wash hands frequently and thoroughly, use hand sanitizer, and exercise proper respiratory technique.

The declaration also states that further restrictions may be imposed if conditions warrant.

It also calls on the sheriff’s officers and all county employees to cooperate in its enforcement.
