Mrs. Sonja Faye Alligood Tuning, age 79, a resident of Washington, passed away Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, at Vidant Beaufort Hospital.

A private graveside service will be held.

Mrs. Tuning was born in Beaufort County on Jan. 9, 1941, to the late Etheridge Alligood and Mae Belle Whitaker Alligood. She was a 1959 graduate of Bath High School, attended Women’s College, graduated from Roanoke Bible College in 1963, graduated from Milligan College in 1964 and graduated from Frostburg State in 1979.

On Aug. 30, 1968, she married Roger Earl Tuning, who survives. After her marriage to Roger, they settled in Cumberland, Maryland, for 51 years. She retired from the State of Maryland school system after 42 years of service. She ended her teaching career at South Penn Elementary School. She loved her students, her fellow teachers and was always willing to help the less fortunate. Mrs. Tuning was a member of Rosemary Church of Christ and Winifred Church of Christ in Cumberland, Maryland.

Survivors include her husband of the home, Roger Tuning; nephew, Brad Alligood and wife Lynn; great-nephew, Parker Colin Alligood; great-niece, Olivia Morgan Alligood; and sister-in-law, Brenda C. Alligood, all of Washington. She was preceded in death by her brother, Neil Colin Alligood.
