Beaufort County has had a total of 723 people test positive for COVID-19 since March 24; 12 of which were confirmed Thursday. There are currently 170 active cases in the county and seven people are currently hospitalized, according to the Thursday update from Beaufort County Emergency Services and Beaufort County Health Department.

According to the update, 544 of the 723 positive cases have recovered from the virus; 10 people have died — seven of those in the space of six days in mid-August — and a tenth person died Tuesday, according to Beaufort County Health Department Director Jim Madson.

All active cases are self-isolating, the update reads.

The total number of cases that have been confirmed in the U.S. rose from 6,094,562 Wednesday to 6,135,796 Thursday; these numbers include 2,231,757 people in the U.S. presumed recovered from COVID-19. The U.S. has the highest total number of cases worldwide; worldwide, there have been 26,123,176 confirmed cases. Nationwide, 186,392 deaths have been attributed to the virus, an increase of 1,478 overnight.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in North Carolina continued to rise from 170,553 Wednesday to 172,201 Thursday. There have been 2,803 deaths in the state attributed to the virus, an increase of 24 overnight. The state currently has 858 COVID-19 associated hospitalizations and 145,884 people are presumed recovered from the virus in North Carolina.

Eastern North Carolina counties total COVID-19 cases as of Thursday numbered (does not include number of recovered): Bertie (457), Beaufort (723), Bladen (738), Brunswick (1,410), Carteret (526), Camden (100), Chowan (231), Columbus (1,158), Craven (1,013), Currituck (113); Dare (245), Duplin (2,086), Edgecombe (1,023), Gates (94), Greene (431), Halifax (878), Hertford (572), Hyde (100), Jones (138), Lenoir (824), Martin (360), New Hanover (3,154), Northampton (346), Onslow (1,527), Pamlico (171), Pasquotank (580), Pender (786), Perquimans (144), Pitt (3,761), Sampson (1,633), Tyrrell (108), Washington (181), Wayne (2,859) and Wilson (1,779). Durham (7,076), Mecklenburg (25,856) and Wake (15,391) counties have the most cases in North Carolina.

There had been 12,131 tests completed in Beaufort County as of Thursday, with 11,258 negatives, 714 positives and 159 pending. These are cumulative numbers and include tests performed at the health department and reporting private medical facilities through the county. Nine of Beaufort County’s cases were tested in other counties but are Beaufort County residents.

The update reminded county residents to “practice the Three W’s:” wear face coverings, wait six feet apart and wash your hands often.
