Unpredictable and rainy weather is what’s in store for eastern North Carolina through the weekend, according to Erik Heden, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City.

“Starting today through the weekend we will be quite unsettled with periods of heavy rain,” Heden wrote in an email update on Tuesday afternoon.

NWS Newport/Morehead City has its eye on an area of disturbed weather southwest of Bermuda, but the likelihood of it becoming a tropical depression over the next several days stands at 40%. Heden said even if the it does become a tropical depression, NWS does not expect it to drastically change an already stormy forecast.

Through the weekend, eastern North Carolinians can expect rain and stiff breezes, with heavy rains potentially causing flooding in areas with poor drainage.

For those headed to the beach, an elevated risk of rip currents is in effect.
