Portions of Milltail Road, on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge which had been under construction, reopened on Friday, September 11, 2020 and will look a bit different. The construction project consisted of raising the profile of Milltail Road on approximately 0.64 miles of roadway and making repairs to Milltail Bridge.  To reduce impacts to wetlands, the road was narrowed to facilitate raising it. There is a pull off approximately 0.4 mile north of the bridge and one just before the approach ramp that will enable motorists to pull over for traffic. Roadsides have just been hydro-seeded and are soft from recent rains, so motorists are encouraged to drive slow and stay off the road shoulders. Visitors should also be patient with road conditions south of the intersection of Sandy Ridge and Milltail Roads where a road closure has been in place since June 15.  Refuge staff have not been across the bridge since late May, but will mow and road grade as soon as it can be scheduled and weather conditions allow. The project was funded and managed through the Federal Highways Administration.
