New, confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Beaufort County numbered 1,005 on Tuesday, after hitting the 1,000-case benchmark Monday. There are now 243 active cases in the county, and seven people are hospitalized, according to the Tuesday update from Beaufort County Emergency Services and Beaufort County Health Department.

According to the update, 744 of the 1,005 total positive cases have recovered from the virus; 18 Beaufort County residents have died — seven of those in the space of six days in mid-August, six between Sept. 10 and Sept. 17, and another is still under investigation.

All active cases are self-isolating, the update reads.

The total number of cases that have been confirmed in the U.S. rose from 6,829,956 Monday to 6,884,032 Tuesday; these numbers include 2,615,974 people in the U.S. presumed recovered from COVID-19. The U.S. has the highest total number of cases worldwide; worldwide, there have been 31,434,340 confirmed cases. Nationwide, 200,541 deaths have been attributed to the virus, an increase of 851 overnight.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in North Carolina continued to rise from 194,355 Monday to 195,548 Tuesday. There have been 3,286 deaths in the state attributed to the virus, an increase of 39 overnight. The state currently has 905 COVID-19 associated hospitalizations and 176,422 people are presumed recovered from the virus in North Carolina.

Eastern North Carolina counties total COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday numbered (does not include number of recovered): Bertie (554), Beaufort (1,005), Bladen (825), Brunswick (1,543), Carteret (619), Camden (111), Chowan (313), Columbus (1,320), Craven (1,297), Currituck (170); Dare (264), Duplin (2,146), Edgecombe (1,284), Gates (128), Greene (507), Halifax (977), Hertford (707), Hyde (124), Jones (148), Lenoir (947), Martin (422), New Hanover (3,934), Northampton (410), Onslow (1,877), Pamlico (235), Pasquotank (683), Pender (907), Perquimans (179), Pitt (4,609), Sampson (1,765), Tyrrell (113), Washington (200), Wayne (3,192) and Wilson (2,116). Guilford (8,209), Mecklenburg (27,687) and Wake (17,010) counties have the most cases in North Carolina.

There had been 14,895 tests completed in Beaufort County as of Monday, with 13,711 negatives, 991 positives and 193 pending. These are cumulative numbers and include tests performed at the health department and reporting private medical facilities through the county. Nine of Beaufort County’s cases were tested in other counties but are Beaufort County residents.

The update reminded county residents to “practice the Three W’s:” wear face coverings, wait six feet apart and wash your hands often.
