Total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Beaufort County numbered 1,046 Friday, after hitting the 1,000-case benchmark Monday. There are now 161 active cases in the county, and eight people are hospitalized, according to the Friday update from Beaufort County Emergency Services and Beaufort County Health Department.

According to the update, 862 of the 1,046 total positive cases have recovered from the virus; 23 Beaufort County residents have died — and another death is still under investigation, according to Jim Madson, director of the Beaufort County Health Department.

All active cases are self-isolating, the update reads.

The total number of cases that have been confirmed in the U.S. rose from 6,962,333 Thursday to 7,015,242 Friday; these numbers include 2,710,183 people in the U.S. presumed recovered from COVID-19. The U.S. has the highest total number of cases worldwide; worldwide, there have been 32,381,243 confirmed cases. Nationwide, 203,329 deaths have been attributed to the virus, an increase of 862 overnight.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in North Carolina continued to rise from 198,187 Thursday to 204,330 Friday.

“Today’s reported increase of 6,143 cases in North Carolina appears to be the result of a backlog within the reporting database, and not an abnormal spike in new cases,” the update reads. “(North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services) is currently investigating the cause of this reporting issue.”

There have been 3,409 deaths in the state attributed to the virus, an increase of 53 overnight. The state currently has 903 COVID-19 associated hospitalizations and 176,422 people are presumed recovered from the virus in North Carolina.

Eastern North Carolina counties total COVID-19 cases as of Friday numbered (does not include number of recovered): Bertie (577), Beaufort (1,046), Bladen (893), Brunswick (1,622), Carteret (677), Camden (113), Chowan (346), Columbus (1,357), Craven (1,591), Currituck (182); Dare (271), Duplin (2,372), Edgecombe (1,342), Gates (138), Greene (593), Halifax (1,006), Hertford (744), Hyde (126), Jones (157), Lenoir (996), Martin (453), New Hanover (4,231), Northampton (449), Onslow (2,151), Pamlico (267), Pasquotank (695), Pender (940), Perquimans (186), Pitt (4,852), Sampson (2,200), Tyrrell (116), Washington (209), Wayne (3,336) and Wilson (2,196). Guilford (8,437), Mecklenburg (28,416) and Wake (17,416) counties have the most cases in North Carolina.

There had been 15,039 tests completed in Beaufort County as of Thursday, with 1,024 positives. Since March, 56 COVID-19-related hospitalizations have occurred in the county, and currently one person is ventilated.

Cumulative numbers include tests performed at the health department and reporting private medical facilities through the county. Nine of Beaufort County’s cases were tested in other counties but are Beaufort County residents.

The update reminded county residents to “practice the Three W’s:” wear face coverings, wait six feet apart and wash your hands often.
