COVID-19: state stats at a glance

Total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Beaufort County numbered 1,083 Wednesday, after hitting the 1,000-case benchmark Sept. 21. There are now 162 active cases in the county, and eight people are hospitalized, according to the Wednesday update from Beaufort County Emergency Services and Beaufort County Health Department.

According to the update, 895 of the 1,083 total positive cases have recovered from the virus; 26 Beaufort County residents have died due to complications from the virus.

The total number of cases that have been confirmed in the U.S. rose from 7,176,111 Tuesday to 7,216,828 Wednesday; these numbers include 2,813,305 people in the U.S. presumed recovered from COVID-19. The U.S. has the highest total number of cases worldwide; worldwide, there have been 33,793,391 confirmed cases. Nationwide, 206,615 deaths have been attributed to the virus, an increase of 939 overnight.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in North Carolina continued to rise from 209,136 Tuesday to 210,632 Wednesday. There have been 3,532 deaths in the state attributed to the virus, an increase of 38 overnight. The state currently has 956 COVID-19 associated hospitalizations and 184,422 people are presumed recovered from the virus in North Carolina.

Eastern North Carolina counties total COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday numbered (does not include number of recovered): Bertie (605), Beaufort (1,083), Bladen (925), Brunswick (1,667), Carteret (727), Camden (116), Chowan (369), Columbus (1,401), Craven (1,685), Currituck (184); Dare (276), Duplin (2,403), Edgecombe (1,386), Gates (145), Greene (623), Halifax (1,046), Hertford (765), Hyde (126), Jones (159), Lenoir (1,021), Martin (466), New Hanover (4,352), Northampton (462), Onslow (2,260), Pamlico (269), Pasquotank (711), Pender (970), Perquimans (188), Pitt (4,976), Sampson (2,254), Tyrrell (116), Washington (212), Wayne (3,427) and Wilson (2,275). Guilford (8,736), Mecklenburg (28,975) and Wake (17,756) counties have the most cases in North Carolina.

There had been 15,630 tests completed in Beaufort County as of Wednesday, with 1,083 positives. Since March, 61 COVID-19-related hospitalizations have occurred in the county, and currently one person is ventilated.

Cumulative numbers include tests performed at the health department and reporting private medical facilities through the county.

The update reminded county residents to “practice the Three W’s:” wear face coverings, wait six feet apart and wash your hands often.
