This week, businesses across Beaufort County received a little pick-me-up. In a time where disruption has become all too familiar, local businesses and professionals were given something to smile about, something to celebrate, something to be proud of.

And you gave it to them.

With each nomination, each vote, Washington Daily News readers sent a “Thank you” to local business. You reminded local professionals they’re appreciated. And you offered these gestures of appreciation by the thousands.

Since we started the Washington Daily News Readers’ Choice Awards several years ago, I look forward to the reaction of the winners once they learn you’ve recognized them among the best Beaufort County has to offer.

Thank you for that.

Local businesses care about what you think. This year’s awards seem particularly well-appreciated, a bit of good news in an otherwise tough year.

Your support goes a long way, and it doesn’t end with a Readers’ Choice vote. Keep showing the love by continuing to shop local whenever possible.

COVID-19 may have complicated how we do business, but it’s still possible — and important — to think “local first.”

For local businesses that don’t offer online shopping, many are able to take your order remotely, over the telephone or by email. Continue to support restaurants by ordering take out or delivery.

This global pandemic has no doubt tested the world’s economy, from commerce to employment. And Beaufort County is no different. But there are still some good things happening in these challenging times.

Just this week, Gov. Roy Cooper announced expansion of a manufacturing company’s Beaufort County operations. Pamlico Air, an air filtration company with its corporate office in downtown Washington, will invest $1.4 million locally and create 39 new jobs.

The next day, Cooper announced North Carolina will enter Phase III of its reopening, easing restrictions on entertainment venues, movie theaters and bars.

While we certainly face additional challenges ahead, it’s encouraging to see some positive steps forward.
