Total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Beaufort County numbered 1,191 Friday. There are now 145 active cases in the county, and 10 people are hospitalized, according to the Friday update from Beaufort County Emergency Services and Beaufort County Health Department.

According to the update, 1,017 of the 1,172 total positive cases have recovered from the virus. Twenty-nine Beaufort County residents have died due to complications from the virus; 21 of those were residents of local nursing homes, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services “Ongoing Outbreaks in Congregate Living Settings” report, which was last updated on Friday.

The total number of cases that have been confirmed in the U.S. rose from 7,578,203 Thursday to 7,648,256 Friday; these numbers include 3,021,252 people in the U.S. presumed recovered from COVID-19. The U.S. has the highest total number of cases worldwide; worldwide, there have been 36,706,213 confirmed cases. Nationwide, 213,390 deaths have been attributed to the virus, an increase of 1,104 overnight.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in North Carolina continued to rise from 225,397 Thursday to 227,431 Friday. There have been 3,747 deaths in the state attributed to the virus, an increase of 25 overnight. The state currently has 1,065 COVID-19 associated hospitalizations and 192,644 people are presumed recovered from the virus in North Carolina.

Eastern North Carolina counties total COVID-19 cases as of Friday numbered: Bertie (644), Beaufort (1,191), Bladen (973), Brunswick (1,823), Carteret (854), Camden (126), Chowan (443), Columbus (1,493), Craven (1,924), Currituck (203); Dare (299), Duplin (2,554), Edgecombe (1,553), Gates (155), Greene (725), Halifax (1,136), Hertford (815), Hyde (146), Jones (167), Lenoir (1,108), Martin (537), New Hanover (4,628), Northampton (500), Onslow (2,549), Pamlico (286), Pasquotank (783), Pender (1,095), Perquimans (208), Pitt (5,389), Sampson (2,392), Tyrrell (117), Washington (224), Wayne (3,751) and Wilson (2,452). Guilford (9,526), Mecklenburg (30,008) and Wake (18,884) counties have the most cases in North Carolina.

There had been 16,578 tests completed in Beaufort County as of Friday, with 1,191 positives. Since March, 67 COVID-19-related hospitalizations have occurred in the county.

Cumulative numbers include tests performed at the health department and reporting private medical facilities through the county.

Of the total number of positive cases in Beaufort County, 84% have reported having symptoms; 16% have reported being asymptomatic. Of those testing positive, 59% are known to have had contact with another person who later tested positive, according to the COVID-19 surveillance data collected by the Beaufort County Health department.

Compared to all Beaufort County townships, Washington has had the most cases of the virus, with 727, followed by Chocowinity, with 152. Edward has had none of its residents test positive for the virus.

The update reminded county residents to “practice the Three W’s:” wear face coverings, wait six feet apart and wash your hands often.
