Mrs. Doris “Jean” Jefferson Gunnels, age 83, a resident of 83 Dean Drive, Chocowinity, died Thursday, December 3, 2020 at her home.

Graveside services were held 2:00 PM Sunday, December 13, 2020 at Oakdale Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Ken Hall.

Mrs. Gunnels was born in Beaufort County on March 26, 1937. She was the daughter of the late William Robert Jefferson and Rosa Cox Jefferson.  Mrs. Gunnels served in many capacities over her 40 years working career. She worked for several banks, the Mebane Lumber Company, Western Electric, and more recently as a secretary/receptionist for the Clinical Center for Study of Development and Learning at UNC-Chapel Hill. Mrs. Gunnels was a volunteer at John Cotton Tayloe Elementary School where she enjoyed working with younger students. She loved to be with people, and did not know a stranger.  Mrs. Gunnels loved to dance, and a great card game of Hand and Foot. She was a member of the Gideons Auxiliary, the Carrollton Book Club, and the First United Methodist Church.

On July 13, 1996, she married John Winston Gunnels, who survives.

Surviving with her husband are her children, Pamela Brady Moser and husband Huey Douglas Moser, Jr., Isaac (Ike) F. Brady III and Carlita Smith Brady, Jefferson (Jeff) York Brady and wife Vicki Lanum Brady; grandchildren, Jill Moser Bartko and husband, Nicholas Bartko, Isaac F. Brady IV and wife, Alexandra Brady, Huey Douglas (Tripp) Moser III and wife Megan Owens Moser, Morgan Brady Vaughn, York Brady, Brandon Wells, Dani Brady Walker and husband Kaleb Walker, Skylar Brady, Piper Brady; great grandchildren, Jacob Bartko, Hayden Brady, Henry Bartko, Ian Bartko, Anderson Brady, Blakeley Walker, Kinley Vaughn, Huxley Walker, Brady Douglas Moser; and brother, William (Billy) Earl Jefferson and his wife, Devere of Chocowinity.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gunnels was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Jefferson.
