Mrs. Margaret “Lucille” Alligood Baker, age 94, a resident of 1162. C.B.H. Lodge Road, Washington, died Monday, January 18, 2021 at her home.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Gil Alligood and Marty Alligood.

Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Baker, Trey Brunson, Cody Godley, Frank Godley, Marty Hodges, Jonathan Lane and Timothy Lane.

Mrs. Baker was born on May 15, 1926 and was raised in the Rosemary Church of Christ Community on Slatestone Road in Beaufort County. She was the daughter of the late William Henry Alligood and Sallie Lilley Alligood.  Mrs. Baker attended Pinetown Elementary School through the 8th grade and then went to Bath High School.

On July 18, 1942, she married William Hilton Baker. They moved to Newport News, Virginia where he was employed by the Newport News Shipyard until he was drafted in World War II.  Mr. Baker spent two years overseas stationed in Italy during the war.  When he came home, they moved on the farm.  Mrs. Baker was a homemaker and worked on the farm with her husband until his death on May 1, 1963.

After her husband’s death, she worked with Sampson’s Shirt Factory, retiring with 32 years of service. She then worked with the Mideast Commission as a receptionist for 14 years.

She was a member of Rosemary Church of Christ, Beaufort County Grange, and a former member of the Sisters of the CBH Lodge.

Survivors include: son, Larry Baker of Washington, NC; daughter in law, Sue Baker of Chesapeake, VA; two granddaughters, Amy Baker Bobbitt of Chesapeake, VA, Sandra Baker Godley of Washington; one grandson, Randy Baker of Chesapeake, VA; great granddaughter, Madison Baker; great grandsons, Trey Brunson, Cody Godley, Jake Baker and Ben Baker, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Terry Baker; four brothers, Vernon Alligood, Leslie Alligood, Bennie Alligood, Herman Lee Alligood; five sisters, Elsie Woolard, Ethel Wallace, Rachel Foreman, Gladys Waters, Virginia Alligood.

Mrs. Baker loved the outdoors and working in her yard and garden.  She was a good cook – especially desserts. She enjoyed traveling with the Senior Group and friends she had worked with as long as her health would allow her to go.
