Geraldine G. (Gibbs) Lucas, 71, of Engelhard, died peacefully Monday, February 8, 2021, at her daughter’s home in Knightdale.

She was born in Richmond, Virginia on June 28, 1949, to the late Bradford Fearing and Ellen Margaret Slattery Gibbs. Being in a military family, they moved frequently during her youth, settling in her High School years in Rockland, Massachusetts where she graduated in 1967.  Her father often brought his family to his hometown of Engelhard, NC where Geraldine’s love of the people and land grew.  In 1977 she returned to Engelhard to make her home.

Geraldine was a veteran of the United States Army, having served her country in Vietnam as a nurse. She was a graduate of Brockton Hospital School of Nursing.  Received a B.S. at Bridgewater State University, and later graduated from East Carolina University’s first Nurse Practitioner Program. She was instrumental in securing funding for the Hyde County Health Department building where she worked caring for her community. Later she worked for many years as a nurse at the former Pitt Memorial Hospital. Always a caregiver, she worked for the Hospice Organization for Eastern Carolina, and helped open the Hospice office in Engelhard.  Throughout her life she never failed in her calling as a healer, always offering her service to anyone in need.

Geraldine enjoyed gathering with friends, and loved her family.  She had a special interest in history and genealogy, and traced her family roots back over 700 years. Family reunions and sharing stories with family was a favorite past time. Other hobbies included cross stitch, crafting, games of all kinds, gardening and spoiling her dogs.

Surviving is her daughter, Laurie Lucas of Knightdale, NC; two sisters, Ellen Lively of Abington, MA and Mary Lee Gagne and husband Ernest of Plymouth, MA; her sister-in-law Gail Gibbs of Halifax, MA; nieces and nephews, and her beloved dogs. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bradford “Tommy” F. Gibbs.

A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at the Robert Carson Gibbs Cemetery in Engelhard. Father Michael Scheutz will officiate.

In honor of Geraldine’s love for storytelling, the family has asked that everyone share their stories and memories of Geraldine with them.
