Southside High School executed the Wing T offense to perfection by rushing for 479 yards on 57 tries in a 52-42 victory at Riverside Thursday night.

The Seahawks (3-3, 2-2) put themselves in playoff contention with the win as the rivalry game at Northside looms Friday.

“We saw on film that we could be successful running the ball on the edge,” coach Jeff Carrow said. “Once it was working, we didn’t try to outsmart ourselves and just stayed with it. Our offensive line did a great job of springing our backs and all three of them were terrific.”

Junior Kenjray Coffield led the assault with 212 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns, while Jaqwan Cobb added 157 on 15 rushes with two scores. Davion Carter tacked on another 105 yards on 15 carries and also scored twice. The Seahawks attempted just two passes on the night.

“Anytime you have three backs with two touchdowns each and over 100 yards, you know your line is doing their job,” Carrow said. “Kenjray had most of his in the first half, then Jaqwan and Davion took over in the second. It really helps our offense to have that balance.”

Riverside scored first, but the Seahawks reeled off three touchdowns for a 22-8 lead. The Knights made it a 22-20 game as the first half ended and had some momentum.

“We told the players that it was a 0-0 game,” Carrow said. “We challenged them to take charge and to force a couple of turnovers. They listened and we won.”

Southside led 30-26 before Carter ran for a five yard score with 19 seconds left in the third quarter for a 38-26 advantage.

Freshman Tequon Moore recovered a fumble two plays later, then quarterback Hundley Stallings capped the scoring drive with a three yard run that put the game away.

Northside is next, with a trip to the playoffs on the line.

“We are on the bubble no matter what happens with them, but it’s always a fun game to play,” Carrow said. “We had to win this one to have a shot, so I’m really proud of our guys.”
