Fireman 1st Class Howard David Hodges was laid to rest on Saturday, April 17, 2021, almost 80 years after his death on the decks of the U.S.S. West Virginia during the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

The Hodges’ large extended family gathered along with friends and those offering their condolences at Joseph B. Paul and Washington Funeral & Cremation. Pastor Tracy Gregory officiated the service and Hodges’ surviving brothers, Randy and Lindy, shared memories of Howard from their childhood.

The U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard, Patriot Guard Riders and local law enforcement escorted Hodges to his final resting place in Oakdale Cemetery alongside his parents, Phate E. Hodges and Annie Elizabeth McLawhorn Hodges.
