Douglas Alvord passed away on April 16, 2021, after a long illness. For the past few years, he resided at Ridgewood Living Center in Washington, North Carolina, where he received very good care. He continued to paint and write while living there.

Douglas lived in New England for a good part of his life, but in the past 30 years he has lived in North Carolina. He loved the climate, the people and the beauty he found there.

He was a multi-talented artist, sculptor, illustrator and author. He specialized in marine and nature art, and his work can be found in museums, private homes and as murals and in books. He was especially fond of children and offered them free instructions, focusing on encouraging creativity and a love of nature.

Some of his work can be seen on his website:  http://douglasalvordart.com/

His work can also be seen locally at the Brown Library in Washington, N.C., and a search for “Douglas Alvord” on the https://thewashingtondailynews.com/ site will bring up numerous articles about his artistic activities in Washington.

Douglas is survived by his sister, Cynthia Crawford and her husband Wayne Cripps of Norwich, Vermont and his niece, Eleanor Crawford-Cripps, of S. Burlington, Vermont.

Douglas was a devoted member of the Asbury United Methodist Church.

There will be a memorial service at the Asbury United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 24th at 2 PM. All who knew Doug are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, c/o James Reed, 282 N. Asbury Church Rd. Washington NC  27889 or Partnerships for the Sounds (call 252 796 1000 to donate).
