Mr. Joseph Vernon Gurganus, Jr., age 84, a resident of Washington Park, died Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

A private graveside service will be held at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington.

Mr. Gurganus was born in Washington, N.C. on June 26, 1936.  He was the son of the late Joseph “Vernon” Gurganus, Sr. and Doris Wynne Gurganus.  Mr. Gurganus graduated from East Carolina University. He served in the U.S. Navy for ten years.  After his military service, Mr. Gurganus worked as Senior Program Analyst for the Navy, stationed at the Pentagon.

Mr. Gurganus is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Harriet Joan Schochet Gurganus of the home; two sons, Martin Douglas Gurganus, Sr. and his wife, Carla Michelle Gurganus of Maryland, Jeffrey Neil Gurganus and his wife, Julia Smith Gurganus of Maryland; five grandchildren, Martin Douglas Gurganus, Jr., Daniel Paul Gurganus and his fiancée, Sarah Jones, Michael Joseph Gurganus and his partner, Elena Dibble, Natalie Erin Gurganus, Megan Wynne Gurganus and partner of the late Frederic Gurganus (Mr. Gurganus’ brother) Sadie Gurley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.
