Mrs. Elda Mae Hendershot Clayton, age 90, a resident of Washington, NC died Sunday May 30, 2021 at her home.

A graveside funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday June 4, 2021 at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington officiated by Travis Boyd.  Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday June 3, 2021 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at her home.Mrs. Clayton was born in McConnelsville, OH on December 9, 1930 daughter of the late Floyd and Vera Davis Hendershot.  She was Valedictorian of her high school graduating class in Ohio.  On January 6, 1991 she married Jack Everette Clayton who preceded her in death on April 18, 2014.  She was a member of Woodmen of the World and First Church of Christ, where she was also a member of the Esther Circle.  

Survivors include her daughter: Ann Waters Hastings of Washington; step children: Denice Smith (Russell) of Washington, Terrie Harding (Wayne) of Chocowinity, Ricky Clayton (Trish) of Washington, Jeffery Clayton (Kelly) of Cape Canaveral, FL, Alton B. Waters (Mary) of Greenville, Gloria Williams of Jamesville grandchildren: Lisa Hansen (Aaron), Paula Turner (Jeff), Denzil Anderson, Jr. (Gwenn), William Hudnell (Denise), Wade Hudnell (Megan), Michael Hudnell (Samantha), Wayne Waters, Jr. (Athena), Chris Waters (Samantha), and Brittany Elks (Justin); sister: Sue Forshey (David) of Florida; brother: Calvin Hendershot (Linda) of Ohio; twenty great grandchildren and a great great grandchild.  Mrs. Clayton was predeceased along with her parents and husband by a stepmother: Clara Walters; sons: Denzil Anderson, Sr. and Wayne Waters, Sr.; granddaughter: Rachel Elizabeth Hudnell; brothers: Floyd J. and Jerry Hendershot; stepsisters: Mabel Daugherty, Jean Love, and Marcina Walters and a stepson: Marvin Ray Waters.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Community Hospice for the care given to Mrs. Elda and for the support they so kindly gave to Ann, Wade and Megan.
