Summer swim season underway-Whitecaps update

The Washington Whitecaps won their first swim meet this summer Tuesday at the Moore Aquatic & Fitness Center in Washington.

33 youths from age seven to 18 compete in the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly as well as the individual medley and the mixed free style relay. All distances are 50 yards unless otherwise noted

Aubrey Woolard led the girls with victories in the 11-12 100 individual medley, the freestyle and butterfly, while Katherine Gautier won the breaststroke and was runner-up in the freestyle and 100 IM for that age group.

Payln Sammons won the freestyle and the butterfly among the 9-10 year olds.

Eliza Lee was first in the 8U IM, won the breaststroke and finished second in the freestyle in the 9-10 age group.

Eva Hill won the backstroke in the 11-12 group and was third in the freestyle.

Sarah Hudnell won the freestyle and backstroke and finished second in the breaststroke in the 13-14 category.

Lydia Smith won the 13-14 100 IM, while Elli Pake was first in the breaststroke and third in the backstroke in that division.

Among the 15-18 year olds, Delta Cole won the 100 IM, the backstroke and breaststroke, while Abigail Lewis was first in the freestyle, second in the butterfly and third in the IM. Ana Roberson finished third in the freestyle.

On the boys side, Cole Blanks led the 8U group with wins in the 25 freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. Grayson Gautier won the breaststroke while Brayden Capehart was second in the backstroke and third in the freestyle.

Collin Dawley won the 9-10 backstroke and was third in the freestyle.

Miller Tyson finished first in the 11-12 freestyle and backstroke, while Russell Hudnell was third in that event.

Evan White won the 13-14 category in the 100 IM, freestyle and butterfly.

In the 15-18 age group, John Hinchey won the freestyle and breaststroke and finished second in the backstroke.

Austin Waters won the IM and butterfly and finished second in the freestyle. Ty Cole won the backstroke and was third in the freestyle, Connor Lewis was second in the butterfly and third in the backstroke and William Hudnell took third in the butterfly.

“This is our third meet and we’ve made progress every time,” first-year head coach Darah Cole said. “We practice for an hour and a half or so four mornings a week, so the kids are rounding into shape. It’s fun to watch some of the less experienced ones improve dramatically. This was the first meet ever for some of them and it’s neat to see them gain enough confidence to try. We will continue to improve as the season goes along.”
