Helen Main Gibson, 89, of Sanford, was peacefully carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom while at the Westfield Rehab and Health Center in Sanford on Tuesday July 6th.

Born in Pinetown, NC on May 3, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Wilbert and Eloise Wallace Main.  Helen’s family moved to Idaho when she was young to help on a family farm.  They returned to Washington, NC where she graduated high school.  She soon met US Marine Byron “Bud” Gibson and the two married in November of 1950.  His work took them around the U.S., from NC, to Virginia, New York, Wisconsin and Tennessee before returning to NC in 1974.  Her unconditional love of children was a major force in her life. Helen started teaching in special education classes and won the Assistant Teacher of the Year in Knightdale Elementary.  Throughout her travels, she was always a faithful member of the Church of Christ.

Helen enjoyed nature.  She loved spending time in her gardens and watching the birds.  She also enjoyed her cup of coffee, with a block of cheese. She was always a devoted wife, mother and Christian.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband Byron “Bud” Gibson and their daughter Judith Gibson Gordon.  She was the mother of Debra Healey, husband Robert, Larry Gibson, wife Penny, John Gibson, wife Paula, and Guy “Buddy” Gibson, wife Janeane.  Helen was the oldest of six and is also survived by her 23 grandchildren, 38 great – grandchildren and 8 great – great – grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 10th, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Miller – Boles Funeral Home, 1150 Fire Tower Rd. Sanford, NC.  A graveside ceremony will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery, 8001 Mt. Pleasant Church Rd. Willow Springs, NC on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
