Pamlico Books is partnering with Beaufort County Bright Futures and Empower Triangle Tutoring to bring a series of free workshops to aid students in the college admissions process. 

For eight weeks, participants will learn about different aspects of the college application process through College Camp. These workshops are free to attend and a different aspect will be covered each week. The topics are college search and CFNC, common app, college essay brainstorming, supplemental essays, college essay workshop day, financial aid, scholarships and an overview night for high schoolers of all ages.  

“I know the school counselors in Beaufort County do amazing work, and the workshops are really meant to support their efforts. I’m passionate about facilitating access and breaking down systemic barriers to college admissions for all students,” said Deb Ryan, co-owner of Pamlico Books and head of Empower Triangle Tutoring. “Applying to college today can seem daunting and stressful, so I hope to help students feel confident in understanding each step of the process, what matters and what’s myth, and to inform students and families of important facets that will empower them to succeed.”

Ryan and her husband, Tom, are in the process of moving to the Washington area and will operate Pamlico Books, a new business set to open later this month. Prior to this, Ryan has taught at elementary, middle and high schools, as well as colleges and universities. She is certified as a college counselor through U.C. San Diego and is a member of IECA and the Independent Educational Consultants Association. 

“We’ll talk through every piece of admissions, from the application itself, residency, financial aid and scholarships, to essay writing and more. It’s free because I want anyone and everyone to feel welcome to attend; the real mission is to put knowledge in students’ hands,” Ryan said. “Students can come to one workshop or all of them. I’m offering the same session twice each week to hopefully accommodate students’ schedules, as well.”

The classes will begin on Saturday, August 14th and will continue weekly through Thursday, October 14th. Each of the eight sessions will be offered at two different times during the week, with classes being held on Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Thursdays at 7 p.m. All sessions will be held at Pamlico Books and will be limited to a maximum of 25 participants due to space limitations. 

On Tuesday, September 7th at 7 p.m., a session for parents, grandparents and guardians will be held at Pamlico Books. This session will serve as an overview of the topics College Camp will focus on and provide an opportunity for questions about the workshops to be asked.
