Thomas Hamilton Sloan, age 90, died peacefully in Washington, NC on June 24, 2021. He was born October 23, 1930 in Winston-Salem to Alexander Thompson Sloan and Ethel Brock Sloan.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Journalism and received a Master’s degree in History from East Carolina University.

Tom was an avid trapshooter for many years, as well as an Amateur Ham Radio operator until his last few months. He loved dogs, telling stories, giving life advice, reading the WSJ, and living a simple and frugal life. He was a great father and a truly good guy. Tom had a wonderfully dry sense of humor that remained with him until the end. He was a gentle man and a gentleman.

He is survived by his daughters Margaret Trainer (Shay) and Lindsay Thorp, his grandson Will Thorp, and a brother, Robert Sloan. He was preceded in death by his parents, and many adored granddogs.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, please write out memorials and send them to Children’s Hope Alliance, P.O. Box 1, Barium Springs, NC 28010. Children’s Hope Alliance held a special place in Tom’s heart.
