Ruth’s House is looking to raise domestic violence awareness with a pair of events coming up later this month.

Ruth’s House is a domestic violence shelter in Washington. The events the nonprofit is holding in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month include the Light The Way Candlelight Vigil at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Mac Hodges Festival Park, as well as Purple Thursday on Oct. 21.

The candlelight vigil is in memory of victims of domestic violence. Ruth’s House will provide candles and light refreshments.

Ruth’s House is encouraging everyone to wear purple on Purple Thursday as “A simple yet easy way of raising awareness about domestic violence.” Anyone participating in the initiative can take pictures of their purple clothes and tag Ruth’s House in the photos on Facebook or Instagram.

The shelter explained Domestic Violence Awareness Month in a Facebook post: “Communities around the country will celebrate the tremendous progress victims and advocates have made over the years, mourn for those whose lives were taken by domestic violence, and connect with one another in a true sense of unity to end domestic violence for good. DVAM is a chance for anyone and everyone — victims, survivors, advocates, law enforcement, supporters, and political leaders — to unite in our work to end domestic abuse.”
