Pungo Christian Academy defeated The Albemarle School and Ridgecroft School to win the first soccer Tar Heel Independent Conference championship in school history. Gabe Niederhauser, Wilson Sawyer and Devin Cadle each scored three goals in the semi-finals, while Cadle scored twice and Wilson Sawyer had the go-ahead goal in the title match. Cadle was named conference player of the year, while Sawyer, Brandon Tooley, Davis Lee and Jay Askew joined him on the All-Conference team. Cadle also earned tournament MVP honors and Sawyer, Tooley, Askew and Niederhasuer joined him on the first team.

Victor Chavez was named Coach of the Year.

The Raiders (11-3) are the fourth seed in the NCISAA 1A state tournament and earned a bye into Saturday’s quarterfinals. They will host Kerr-Vance Academy or Crossroads Christian Saturday at 2 p.m.
