Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead, made it 3-0 at halftime, then survived a Midway second half comeback for a 4-3 victory in the opening round of the 2A state soccer playoffs Monday night at home.

The 14th seeded Pam Pack went to 14-5-1 while the visitors from Newton Grove ended the season 10-9-1. Washington travels to Durham to face #3 N.C. School of Science and Math Thursday.

Juniors Yahir Ibera and Luke Brown scored back-to-back goals in the first half, then Will Glover made it 3-0 at halftime. Sophomore Ivan Machado scored the eventual game winner with 9:36 left.

“We got in trouble with yellow cards and had to play a man down in the second half,” coach Jim Kozuch said. “We set the tone with a great first half, then finished under some adversity. “This will give us some confidence as we go on the road against a higher seed.”
