Northside scored on every possession until the last one in Thursday’s 69-20 rout of Hobbton in the 1A second round playoff game at Bing Mitchell Field.

The Panthers (11-1) host Friday’s Southside/KIPP Pride winner in the East semi-finals Nov. 19.

Northside took the ball at midfield to start the game and three Mitch Godley carries later, it was 7-0.

The Wildcats (5-7) answered with eight passes in nine plays for a 7-7 tie, but Godley answered with a 27 yard touchdown run for a 14-7 Northside advantage before the late arrivals could find their seats.

The Panther defense forced a punt, then Godley raced 52 yards on the second play for a 28-7 advantage before Griffin Johnson picked off a Wildcat pass and returned it 45 yards for a 35-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“We were extremely ready to play after having the first round bye,” coach Keith Boyd said. “We were excited to start the playoffs and played with tremendous energy in the first half. We ran the same play all night and it kept working.”

Briley Cooper scored three second quarter touchdowns on a three and 20-yard runs, then picked off a pass and returned it 60 yards for a score. Godley tacked on another touchdown with a 14-yard jaunt and the Panthers led 62-16 at halftime.

Freshman Max Vansant scored Northside’s final touchdown on a three yard run to start the fourth quarter.

“We just did what we do,” Boyd said. “We played our style of physical, grass roots football and it worked out. The win gives us more confidence, but the key is to stay humble, block out the outside interference and keep working, because we can always get better.

Godley led the offense with 169 yards and four touchdowns on 12 carries as the Panthers rolled up 236 yards rushing in the first half. Chase Tomani converted eight of nine extra point attempts.
