Filing period for 2022 elections begins Monday

The filing period for the 2022 statewide primary elections starts at noon on Monday, Dec. 6, and ends at noon on Friday, Dec. 17.

Depending on the office sought, candidates will file their notices of candidacy with either their county board of elections or the State Board of Elections.

Primary candidates for the following offices will file with the State Board of Elections:

·      U.S. Senate

·      U.S. House of Representatives

·      N.C. Supreme Court Justice

·      Judge of the N.C. Court of Appeals

·      Superior Court judge

·      District Court judge

·      District attorney

Primary candidates for the following offices file with their county board of elections:

·      N.C. Senate

·      N.C. House of Representatives

·      All county and municipal offices

Due to space constraints and the COVID-19 pandemic, state-level candidate filing has been moved from the State Board office to the Exposition Center at the N.C. State Fairgrounds, located at 4285 Trinity Road in Raleigh. Candidates and guests should enter through Gate 9 on Trinity Road and exit through Gate 5 onto Youth Center Road.

For candidates filing with the State Board, the following hours apply: On the first day of filing, Dec. 6, filing will be open from noon to 5 p.m.; on the last day of filing, Dec. 17, filing will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. On all other business days of the filing period, candidate may file from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Candidates are not permitted to run in a party primary unless they have been affiliated with that party for at least 90 days as of the date of filing a notice of candidacy.

Filing fees are required for all offices, unless a candidate has submitted a valid petition in lieu of paying a filing fee, and the petition has been certified. Filing fees are based on 1% of the annual salary of the office. All filing fees must be made in the form of cash or personal check.  Filing Fees above $50 must be made in the form of a check and cannot be paid by a check from a business.

Candidates filing through the State Board need to pay the following filing fees:

·      U.S. Congress: $1,740

·      Associate Justice, N.C. Supreme Court: $1,567

·      Judge, State Court of Appeals: $1,502

·      Judge, Superior Court: $1,421

·      Judge, District Court: $1,251

·      District Attorney: $1,374

Candidates filing through their county board of elections need to pay the following filing fees:

·      State Senator: $140

·      State House of Representatives: $140

·      Clerk of Superior Court: $998

·      Sheriff: $1,134

·      County Commissioner: $179

·      School Board: $50

Soil and Water District Conservation Supervisor filing begins on Monday, June 13, 2022 at noon and ends on Friday, July 1, 2022 at noon. The filing fee is $5.
