Senior Abby Lewis qualified for the eastern regional in tennis this fall with her doubles partner, Ana Roberson, and swims four events for the Pam Pack this winter. The Washington native started early and has enjoyed competing in both sports. She’s a National Honor Society member and is taking two college classes each semester her senior year.

  1. Which sport did you learn first?

Abby: Both at the same time, actually. My family would go over to the Washington Racquet Club to play tennis and swim when I was six or seven and I’ve been playing since. There were summer and year-round teams for both sports, so I’ve continued to play both.

  1. What about the two sports has held your interest?

Abby: They are both individual sports within a team sport. You keep a team score, but each individual match or race can help the team. I like it that what I do as an individual helps my team. My two swimming relays (200 medley and the 200 freestyle) are like that. I hold myself accountable to swim my part fast, so the team has a better chance to win.

  1. You also swim the 200 individual medley, which is backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle along with the 100 freestyle. Which of the four strokes is your favorite?

Abby: The butterfly because it’s difficult to learn. Everybody swims freestyle. I started butterfly when I was 10 and am still learning. Your arms and legs have to be in the right position and it works all your muscles really hard. You have to have the right technique and it’s a challenge to get it right.

  1. What are your plans after graduation?

Abby: I’m not sure just yet, but I’m looking at North Carolina St. My dad went there and we’ve been to a lot of football and basketball games there. I like the campus. I’ve enjoyed my Accounting and Principles of Business classes here, so I’m thinking about majoring in Business.

  1. If you could time travel, would you go forward or back?

Abby: I would go back, because it would be neat to visit difference periods in history. I’ve always loved 80’s music and it would be fun to see the styles and how things were then.

Editor’s note: She’s right. The 80’s were awesome.
