Beaufort County student members of the Name Unknown, and Evolution teams from Northside High School, The Great McBean Team from Beaufort Early College High School, and  The Fearsome Foursome, The Pollutants, The Tree Huggers and 5 Guys teams from Northeast Elementary  will be participating in the 2022 North Carolina Envirothon competition April 29-30 at Cedarock Park in Burlington, NC. The two-day event is designed to test the knowledge and skills of students that have a strong interest in environmental science and natural resource conservation.

To qualify for the NC Envirothon, three-to-five-member teams had to place in the top seven positions within their grade divisions at one of eight, area-level qualifying events held earlier this year across the state. Beaufort County teams qualified at the Coastal Envirothon Competition held in March at Weyerhaeuser’s Cool Springs Environmental Education Center. The competition is open to public and private school students, homeschooled students, 4-H groups, FFA clubs or other youth group organizations.

Envirothon is the most widely recognized hands‐on environmental education program in the nation. Middle and high school students immerse themselves in a year‐long learning process that combines in‐class curriculum with hands‐on field experiences facilitated by resource professionals such as soil scientists, foresters, and wildlife specialists. This intense training culminates in a competition where teams test their management knowledge and problem-solving skills  in five subject areas: Soils/Land Use, Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife, and a current environmental issue. Scores determine winning placements.

State awards will be given to top teams at the middle and high school levels. Scholarships are awarded to the top place high school team. The high school winning team of this year’s NC Envirothon will represent North Carolina at the 2022 North America Envirothon.

Locally, the Envirothon competition is coordinated by soil and water conservation districts and sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
