BCCC Foundation recognizes scholarship recipients

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce these scholarship recipients for the Spring 2022 semester. Registration is open for the Summer 2022 and Fall 2022 semesters. The Beaufort Promise does not cover summer semesters, but qualified students can access financial aid. Students can apply for scholarships for Summer 2022 or Fall 2022 after they have applied for financial aid by filling out a FAFSA.
Yumi Matsunaga, 18, received the Cypress Landing Scholarship. She is a Washington resident who is part of the nursing program. Matsunaga attended Washington Montessori Public Charter School and plans to become a registered nurse.
In 2007 the homeowners in the Cypress Landing subdivision created this first-of-its-kind endowment at BCCC. Mrs. Helen Sommerkamp and Mr. Chris Harris organized a campaign to meet the initial goal. This scholarship is awarded to a Beaufort County BCCC student who demonstrates need.
Melissa Lewis, 39, received the Vidant Beaufort Health Scholarship is a Windsor resident and a part of the medical billing and coding program. She attended Bertie High School. The mother of two is a program integrity investigator for the Washington County Department of Social Services. She plans to work in healthcare. Lewis has an Associate in Arts in Foundations of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration with a concentration in Health Management.
The Vidant Beaufort Health Scholarship is available to qualified students from nursing, MLT, nursing assistant, phlebotomy and any other curriculum or continuing education medical-related field.
Emilou Spruill, 34, received the Lucy Burgess Scholarship. She is a Washington resident and a pre-nursing student. Spruill attended Creswell High School. She is the daughter of Charles and Freda Phelps of Creswell, a mother of one, and the wife of Danny Spruill. She plans to work as a labor and delivery nurse. Spruill also holds a Master in Extension Education.
Established in 1996 as a memorial to Lucy W. Burgess, a former resident of Beaufort County and long-term employee of the NC Department of Social Services, this annual scholarship is awarded to a student with academic promise. The recipient must have some work experience, be committed to getting an education, and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Madison LeNeave, 22, received the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship. She is a Greenville resident and a nursing student. LeNeave attended D.H. Conley High School. She is the daughter of Jesse and Andrea Leneave and plans to work as a pediatric nurse. LeNeave holds an Associate in General Education.
Mrs. Sam Tim (Tay) Carter, with encouragement from her children Libba, Lou, Clay, and Mary, started the Tayloe Family Endowment in 2003, in memory of her grandfather, Dr. David Thomas Tayloe. The endowment also honors his numerous descendants who have made significant contributions to the medical community of Beaufort County. Scholarships generated by this endowment are awarded to BCCC students enrolled in any medically related program.
Abigail Chance, 27, received the Stephanie Zablocki Jones Memorial Scholarship. She is a Greenville resident and a medical laboratory technology student. Chance attended Cary High School, and plans work as a medical laboratory technician in a hospital. She is the wife of Tony Chance Jr. and the daughter of Linda and Rusty McKinney of Holly Springs.
This scholarship supports students in the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program or other medical programs. Stephanie finished the BCCC MLT program & worked as a phlebotomist at the Leo G. Jenkins Cancer Center. She was lost in 2006 while administering first aid at an accident scene. She was the mother of three, a volunteer youth coach & assistant Scoutmaster at Troop 99 in Washington. This scholarship will help others model Stephanie’s academic achievement & community service; helping others with great skill, compassion & dedication.
Asha Paschal, 40, received the Stephanie Zablocki Jones Memorial Scholarship. Paschal is a Greenville resident and a medical lab technology student. She attended John Jay High School and plans to work in a company or hospital. Paschal holds an Associate of Applied Science in Healthcare Management.

Jennifer Maness, 31, received the Bob & Deborah Morlock Scholarship. She is a Williamston resident who is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing. Maness attended Scotland High School and holds an Associate in Applied Sciences in Radiography. She plans to become a NICU Nurse. Maness is the daughter of Lori & Eugene Reynolds of Wagram, North Carolina. The mother of two is the wife of Matt Maness.
Established in 2021 in honor of Bob and Deborah Morlock, this annual scholarship supports second-year nursing students who demonstrate high academic achievement and financial need. Eligible students must be from Beaufort, Hyde, or Martin Counties. Mr. Morlock graduated from the BCCC Nursing program in 1980.
Callee Hodges, 21, received the Levi Scott McGowan Scholarship. Hodges is working toward her Associate Degree in Nursing. She attended D.H. Conley High School and plans to work as a registered nurse at Vidant Medical Center, where she works as a nurse aide. She is the daughter of Calvin and Jenny Hodges of Winterville.
Established in 2018, this scholarship provides financial support to an academically capable, second year Beaufort County nursing student who demonstrates financial need. This scholarship is to assist with tuition.
