The Down East Seniors Club held their May 11 meeting at the Blind Center of NC in Washington. President Roy Whichard led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America” and the group pledged allegiance to the flag. Charles Smith gave the opening prayer and Hackney presented factoids for the date in history.

Whichard introduced member Bobby Roberson as the speaker. Roberson is a member of the Washington city council and he spoke about the proposed budget the council is currently considering. The proposed budget total is 170 million dollars, 20.75% higher than the current budget total. To fund this total the city tax rate would have to change from 53 cents per hundred dollars valuation to 60 cents. All enterprise fund totals are projected to increase, with the largest increase being five million dollars in the electric fund. Roberson said changes will likely be considered before the budget is finalized.

David Jones won the 50/50 drawing.

The Down East Seniors Club is a group of older men in the Washington area who meet for fellowship and an interesting program Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 and make contributions to local charities. For more information email Julius Brauer at julius.brauer@gmail.com.
