The Down East Seniors Club held their May 18 meeting at the Blind Center of NC in Washington. President Roy Whichard led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America” and the group pledged allegiance to the flag. Phil Ryals gave the opening prayer and Hackney presented factoids for the date in history.

Curtis Brookshire introduced Bishop Samuel Jones (shown between Roy Whichard (L) and Mark Eakes) as the speaker. Jones and his wife, Mother Regina Jones, are the founders and leaders of the Purpose of God Annex. Their initial program was a summer recreational hall to provide guidance for children as they develop.

As they saw other needs in the community, they added an after-school program, Project New Hope (to equip older teens and adults to find gainful employment), Share Shop (to provide clothes, furniture, and appliances to needy people), Mission Homes (to provide assistance for homeless families to obtain housing), and Miracle Meals (food pantry for those who have unmet food needs). All these programs are run by volunteers and supported by donations. The children are taught discipline and basic life skills such as completing homework, making up beds, and housecleaning. The club presented the Joneses with a $500 donation to support their programs.

Next week’s speaker will be Rev. Chris Adams, Rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Mark Eakes won the 50/50 drawing.
