County athletes compete at state track meet

Northside, Southside and Washington High School had solid performances at the 1A and 2A state track meets last weekend at North Carolina A & T State University in Greensboro.

Washington senior William Reid finished seventh in 110 hurdles (15.74), while sophomore Hailey Broadwell was eighth in the 3200 meters (14:02.35), both with faster times than in the East regional the previous week.

“I’m really happy for both of them,” coach Perry Owens said. “Hailey ran way faster than her seed time and has two more years to come back and do better and will our girls team leader next year. William capped his career with two straight appearances at state and will go on to Saint Augustine’s in Raleigh to play college football. They ended the season with strong performances.”

Burlington Cummings HS won the boys 2A state title, while R-S Central of Rutherfordton took the girls crown.

Mountain Island Charter of Mount Holly won the 1A boys title, while Swain County won the girls championship.

Individually, Northside senior Keanu Dugan was seventh in the boys 1600 (4:56.70), eighth in the 3200 (10:57.47) and was part of the eighth-place 4 x 800 relay team (8:56.74) with Mason Newman, Andrew Harding and Brent Holland.

Senior Bryson Proctor finished ninth in the 300 hurdles (43.92), Newman was 11th in the 800 (2:15.45), junior Jordan Harding was 11th in the triple jump (’38-08.75), junior Zane Brooks was 12th in the 110 hurdles (18:53) and freshman Jayvian O’Neal was 16th in the shot put (’36-03.5).

The 4 x 400 relay team of Holland, Proctor, Jordan Harding and Gavyn Taylor finished 12th.

For Southside, sophomore Jacob Taylor was ninth in the 800 (2:13.99), junior Darren Joyner was 13th in the high jump (5-8) and was part of the 12th place 4 x 200 relay team along with Kenjray Coffield, Victor Gonzalez and Tater Moore.

Junior Ka’Nyah O’Neal led the Seahawks girls with a seventh place finish in the high jump (‘4-10). Senior Mackenzie Sparks was 13th in the shot put (‘27-05), freshman I’kiriyah Minor was 14th in the triple jump (’29-04).

The 4 x 100 relay team of O’Neal, Aniya Moore, Jalyn Oden and Malanda Smith was 13th(56:09) and Savannah Phelps, Delta Cole, Lelia Jones and Emma Smith were 14th in the 4 x 800 (12:53.34).

Sophomore Kiele Scott was ninth in the 3200 (13:38.64) and classmate Mariah Jones was 12th in the shot put (’27-05.25).

The Panthers 4 x 800 relay team of Leah Cahoon, Anna Claire Barrett, Emma Boyd and Ava Hedgepeth was 15th (13:04.09).

“The senior leadership was prevalent from Bryson (Proctor) and Keanu (Dugan) and our youngsters represented Northside very well also,” co-head coach Ole Robinett said. “Kiele (Scott) did very well also and our athletes witnessed the type of competition the state has to offer. This will fuel them for next year.”
