Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Washington High School baseball coach Will Tyson will host two-day summer camps for aspiring Pam Pack players next week.

The first session, for age six through nine is Monday, June 27 & Tuesday June 28 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Futrell Field on the WHS campus.

The second session for 10-14 year old players, rising 8th graders, will be Wednesday, June 29 and Thursday, June 30 from 8:30 to 11:30.

The cost is $75 per player and all proceeds go to the WHS baseball program.

“Monday and Tuesday are for teaching the younger guys literally how to play baseball,” Tyson said. “We’ll start with the basics of throwing and catching, how to hold the ball, how to catch and how to hold the bat. We’ll teach the proper fielding position and technique, how to run the bases and discuss the rules.  If a kid has never played before, we want him to leave with a general understanding of how the game is supposed to be played.”

Each camper should bring their own equipment including a bat, glove and catchers gear, cleats or tennis shoes. Baseball attire is recommended but not required.

The second session is for more experienced players who are thinking about playing high school baseball in the future and will go beyond the basics to learning how to successfully execute situations including run downs, bunting, stealing bases and more advanced fielding techniques.

“We are looking to fine-tune things for the older guys, anything from shortening a swing to turning double plays faster,” Tyson said. “We want to focus on preparing that age group to have a successful middle school season and hopefully be ready to play for us in a couple of years.”

Pam Pack baseball staff along with current and former players will provide the coaching.

Tyson has been the Pam Pack JV coach the past two seasons and is the president of the Washington Youth Baseball League. He pitched at Barton College.

“This camp is a great way to spend some time during summer break learning additional skills to help develop their baseball ability,” Tyson said. “I think the kids will get a lot out of it and we are excited to get on the field.”

There will be same day registration available starting at 8 a.m. Monday and Wednesday.

It is also possible to register on Will Tyson’s Facebook page.
