Washington and Southside earned road victories, while Northside dropped a 16-14 decision at Camden County. Pam Pack junior Josh Gordon actually brought down his career average per carry, despite topping 200 yards, to lead area performers in the first week of action.

  1. Josh Gordon-The junior had one varsity carry for 45 yards last season, so his career average dropped despite gaining 208 yards on 23 carries against the Hurricanes. He raced 17 yards for his first varsity touchdown late in the third quarter for a 27-6 lead

  1. Chris Carter-After earning All-Conference honors at cornerback, the Pam Pack senior volunteered to play quarterback two weeks before practice started. His debut under center resulted in 132 yards rushing on 11 carries and two completions on three pass attempts for 33 yards and a touchdown.

  1. Tequon (Tater) Moore-Southside stuck to the usual gameplan of establishing the run in a 21-6 victory at North Duplin and the junior was the featured back. Moore carried 14 times for 135 yards, including 20 and 14-yard touchdown runs. He also contributed three tackles from his cornerback spot.

Best of the rest: Camden County shut down the usually explosive Northside running game while limiting the Panthers to 140 yards on the ground. Senior Marcus Clayton had 73 yards and both touchdowns. Gus Vansant led the defense with 14 tackles including six solos, while Jayvian O’Neal had 11 tackles and Griffin Johnson added eight. Johnson, Carson Clinkscales and Jamie Corprew also collected sacks.

Pungo Christian Academy: The 8-man Raiders lost, 28-14, to Father Capodanno HS of Vass, N.C. at home. Quarterback Ethan Mann had a hand in both touchdowns with a one-yard run and a 21-yard pass to Evan Woolard.

Southside: Senior Xavier Ham led the defense with nine tackles, including eight solos as the Seahawks held North Duplin off the scoreboard until the final minutes. Gabe Matthews was 3-3 on extra points and senior Darren (DJ) Joyner ran for 62 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown and contributed 5.5 tackles including four solo.

All county teams are home Friday as Northside takes on North Duplin, Southside hosts Washington County, Washington faces Northampton and PCA plays Brunswick Academy.
