No longer hidden from view underneath an opaque veil, the mural on the corner of Market and Main Streets in downtown Washington was revealed on Thursday, Sept. 29.

The mural was painted by Washington native, Samantha Brinson who spent a total of two months painting a scene of Market Street facing the waterfront. The center building once existed in Washington. It was built in the 1890’s, but torn down in the 1960’s. It housed a market on the first floor and an armory on the second floor.

The Historic Port of Washington, the Washington Kiwanis Club, the Washington Noon Rotary Club and others assisted in the fruition of the mural.

Mayor of Washington, Donald Sadler, said the mural was a “beautiful enhancement” to the downtown.

Dr. David Loope, president of Beaufort County Community College and the Washington Noon Rotary Club said the mural is a great example of present day community members connecting with the city’s history and sharing it with future generations.

There are future plans by Historic Port of Washington and Samantha Brinson to restore historic ghost signs in downtown and to add more murals to downtown
