The Anchor bowl trophy returned to Southside High School for the first time in four years after the lowest scoring game in series history. The Seahawks (5-2) got past host Northside (3-4), 10-7 in the annual battle between county rivals. Yards (and stats) were hard to come by, but Southside senior Darren (DJ) Joyner made the biggest play, which keeps him at the top of the Top Three chart for the second straight week.

1. Darren (DJ) Joyner-the tailback/receiver found the going tough on the ground with only 11 yards on five carries, but scored the games’ only touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 22-yard catch and run. He also contributed five tackles, including one for loss and a sack as Southside remained tied with East Carteret for the Coastal Plains Conference lead.

2. Walker Hill-the Seahawks senior quarterback put the ball in the air a season-high 14 times at Northside and all four completions put his team in position to score. He hit Tequan (Tater) Moore on a 35-yard completion that set up Gabe Matthews field goal for the first points of the game, then found Joyner on the scoring pass on the next drive.

3. Carson Clinkscales-the Northside senior kept his team in the game throughout with 58 yards rushing, 45 return yards and made five tackles from his linebacker spot with one for a loss.

Best of the Rest: Northside: Seniors Jayvion O’Neal and Elijah Holloway led a Panthers defense that limited Southside to 38 yards rushing. O’Neal had six tackles, including two for a loss, while Holloway also had two for loss. Junior fullback Jamie Corprew scored the Panthers only touchdown on an 18-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Pungo Christian Academy: Junior quarterback Ethan Mann was 5-6 for 73 yards and two touchdowns in the Raiders (2-5) 52-14 home loss to Halifax Academy. Mann also contributed 11 tackles on defense. Senior Conner Sweet caught four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore Quay Artis scored a touchdown and had 92 return yards. Sophomore Holden Williams made 10 tackles.

Southside: Junior Tequan (Tater) Moore had a 34-yard pass reception that set up Gabe Matthews’ 24-yard field goal for a 3-0 advantage at Northside. He added 11 rushing yards and made seven tackles. Manvonte Deloach caught a 35-yard pass and linebacker Xavier Ham made five tackles, including two for loss.

Washington: Junior tailback Josh Gordon ran for 105 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown in the Pam Pack’s 26-13 home loss to undefeated Greene Central. Quarterback Chris Carter scored the other touchdown and had 65 yards rushing. Seniors Desmond Ward and Jonathan Carter recovered fumbles, while K.J. Moore had a pair of sacks. Sophomore linebacker Gabe Davis led the team with 15 tackles.

Up next: It’s homecoming for the three Beaufort County public schools. Northside hosts Jones at 6 p.m., while Southside entertains LeJeune and Washington takes on North Pitt at 7 p.m. and Pungo Christian Academy travels to Mattamuskeet.
